Fall films ’26: Tom Cruise’s big swing, Oscar bait and Godzilla

Fall movies are frequently better than the oversized blockbusters of the warmer months — a fact recognized by the glittering gold of awards season, which starts right about now.

Here are my picks for 10 must-see films opening in theatres from Labour Day until U.S. Thanksgiving on Nov. 26.

1. Practical Magic 2 (Sept. 11)

It’s not often a failed movie gets a sequel, unless you’re talking genre trash, which the first “Practical Magic” technically wasn’t. But neither was the 1998 supernatural comedy a hit, which may explain why it’s taken 28 years for Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman to return as Sally and Gillian Owens, witchy Massachusetts sisters with a regrettable habit of leaving male suitors dead: “It’s not great for the Tinder bio,” Gillian admits in the sequel’s trailer. The original film has become a cult fave, while Bullock and Kidman are now seasoned actors. Can they work real magic this time? I’m curious, maybe even optimistic.
