A local honour for a national treasure

On Monday, night, the Toronto Film Critics Association awarded Canadian First Nations filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin the group's prestigious Clyde Gilmour Award for her lifetime contribution to Canadian cinema. Obomsawin, who has made 50 films, was born in New Hampshire, but has lived most of her life in Canada. Her most recent film is We Can't Make the Same Mistake Twice.

The film is about a human rights complaint against the Canadian government for discrimination against First Nations children.
